Welcome to NYC Dental Lounge | Your Premier Destination for Retainers and Night Guards

Retainers & Night Guards

At NYC Dental Lounge, we believe in providing an easy, comprehensive dental experience. That’s why we offer post-orthodontic, post-restorative, and replacement retainers. Retainers are an essential part of maintaining your orthodontic results and may require periodic replacement due to wear or changes in your teeth’s structure from restorative procedures like fillings, crowns, and veneers.

In addition to our retainer services, we also offer custom night guards to protect your teeth from the damaging effects of bruxism. This unconscious habit of excessive teeth grinding and clenching often occurs during sleep and can lead to tooth damage, headaches, and more. Our occlusal guards, also known as night guards, are designed to provide you with the protection you need to keep your teeth healthy.

What is an Occlusal Guard?

An occlusal guard, also known as a night guard, protects your teeth’s surfaces from damage due to clenching and grinding. These guards resemble mouthguards worn in sports but use a thinner, more-comfortable plastic.

If you clench or grind your teeth, you may have bruxism or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ). Following are symptoms of bruxism that a night guard may be able to alleviate:

  • Jaw Pain
  • Muscle pain in the head and neck
  • Wear on your teeth
  • Loss of tooth enamel
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Headaches
  • Sleep disruption

In addition to providing occlusal guards, NYC Dental Lounge also offers Therapeutic Injectables to help relieve the painful symptoms of TMJ disorder.

Why You Might Need a Retainer

A retainer holds teeth in place to maintain alignment, and patients typically wear them at night indefinitely after braces or Invisalign treatment. NYC Dental Lounge is here to equip you with a retainer for any of the following circumstances:

  • You’ve just finished an orthodontic treatment and want to maintain your results.
  • You lost your retainer.
  • Your retainer is worn out or broken.
  • A new restoration (filling, crowns, veneers, etc.) has affected how your retainer fits.

Types of Retainers

There are many types of retainers, and Dr. JoAnna Pufnock is eager to help you determine which is right for you and create it for you depending upon your individual need. The two most common types of retainers are:

  • Hawley retainer: Usually made from durable plastic or acrylic and wire and sculpted to the inside of your mouth.
  • Essix retainer: These are clear retainers made from molded plastic. While less durable than a Hawley retainer, most of our clients prefer an Essix-style retainer for aesthetic and comfort reasons.

Why Retainers and Night Guards Matter

Protect Your Investment with Retainers

After undergoing orthodontic treatment, your teeth may be prone to shifting back to their original positions if not properly retained. This is where retainers play a crucial role. Retainers are custom-made dental appliances designed to hold your teeth in their new positions, preventing them from relapsing. Without proper retention, the time, effort, and money invested in orthodontic treatment could be compromised.

Preserve Your Straight Smile

Imagine investing months or even years in achieving a beautifully aligned smile through braces or aligners, only to see it gradually revert to its previous state. Retainers act as guardians of your smile, ensuring that your teeth maintain their newfound alignment and continue to look their best. By wearing your retainer as prescribed by your orthodontist, you can enjoy the results of your treatment for years to come.

Guard Your Teeth While You Sleep

Teeth grinding and clenching, also known as bruxism, can have detrimental effects on your dental health. Many individuals are unaware that they grind their teeth during sleep, yet the consequences can be significant, including worn enamel, tooth sensitivity, and even jaw pain. Night guards provide a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth, minimizing the impact of bruxism and preserving the integrity of your smile.

Prevent Dental Damage and Discomfort

For those who suffer from bruxism, the consequences extend beyond cosmetic concerns. Chronic teeth grinding can lead to structural damage, including chipped teeth, fractures, and even tooth loss in severe cases. Additionally, the constant pressure exerted on the jaw muscles can result in headaches, facial pain, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Night guards help alleviate these symptoms by cushioning the teeth and reducing the force of grinding, allowing you to wake up feeling refreshed and pain-free.
