Anything that is causing you dental pain or limits your ability to chew or talk can qualify as a dental emergency. Let’s take a look at some common dental emergencies and how to handle them.
To treat your toothache, procedures will vary according to the cause. We will quickly identify the cause of pain and may recommend one of the following treatments:
A chipped tooth or cracked tooth is indeed a dental emergency. If you chip or crack a tooth, give us a call right away. We’ll get you in as soon as possible to repair it!
If a sizable piece broke off of your tooth, you’ll want to recover the piece(s) if possible and store it in a container of milk. Once that’s handled, give us a call so we can get you in to have a look. Bring along the broken piece from your tooth in case it can be restored.
If a tooth is knocked out altogether, recover the tooth if you can and place it in a container of milk so you can bring it along to your appointment. Do not attempt to place the tooth back into the socket, as this can cause an infection. Call us right away, and we’ll see you ASAP!
Not all dental emergencies have to do with your teeth. You may experience gum pain, swelling, or infection. Gums can also be injured due to trauma like a fall or accidental bite. If any of these concerns are causing you disruptive pain, please contact us immediately for emergency treatment and relief!

A dental emergency is any situation that involves severe pain, bleeding, or trauma to the teeth or gums that requires immediate attention. Common emergencies include knocked-out teeth, severe toothaches, abscesses, fractures or chips in teeth, and lost fillings or crowns. If you are experiencing any of these issues or any other condition causing significant discomfort, it’s important to seek emergency dental care promptly.
Yes, Dental Lounge welcomes walk-in patients for emergency dental services. However, calling ahead, if possible, allows us to prepare for your arrival and provide quicker service. We make every effort to see emergency cases as soon as we can.
Our goal is to see emergency patients as quickly as possible, often on the same day. Our team understands the urgency of dental emergencies and strives to provide prompt and efficient care to alleviate pain and address the issue.
If you have a knocked-out (avulsed) tooth, handle the tooth by the crown (the part that is usually exposed in the mouth), not the root. Gently rinse the tooth with water without scrubbing and try to reinsert it into the socket. If that’s not possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk or your saliva and bring it with you to the dental office immediately. Time is critical in saving a knocked-out tooth.
Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage dental pain until you can see the dentist. Applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek near the painful area can also reduce swelling and discomfort. However, these measures are temporary and should not replace seeking professional dental care as soon as possible.
While not all dental emergencies can be prevented, maintaining good oral hygiene practices, wearing a mouthguard during sports, avoiding hard foods that can crack or break teeth, and visiting the dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings can significantly reduce the risk of emergencies.
Dental Lounge provides contact information for after-hours dental emergencies. In the event of a severe emergency that cannot wait, we recommend visiting an emergency room or urgent care center equipped to handle dental emergencies.
